3 Gorgeous Places To Visit In Northern Italy

When you think of amazing places to visit in Italy, a lot of the top holiday destinations are closer to the south. There’s Rome, Naples, the Amalfi Coast, Puglia, etc. Most of the time, if you want to go somewhere up north, your choices are either Milan or Venice. Both of these are great, but there are other wonderful places to explore as well.

Today, you’ll see three simply stunning places to visit in Northern Italy that you may have never considered before!

Verona

Verona is known as the birthplace of Romeo & Juliet. In fact, you can actually visit Juliet’s House and get a photo on the iconic balcony. It’s such a beautiful city to visit as it brings old Italian architecture to the fore. The buildings are so gorgeous and well-crafted, and there’s even an ancient Roman amphitheatre. The Verona Arena actually still hosts operas, so that’s an experience like no other if you can get tickets. The Piazza Delle Erbe is another must-visit place; this is where all the action happens in a busy city square with loads of restaurants and shops.

Lake Garda

The first of two lakes that you desperately need to visit in Northern Italy. Lake Garda is known for its beautiful waters and phenomenal surroundings. It’s a massive lake, meaning you have miles to explore around all the sides. Of course, you can rent a boat and paddle along the clear waters, and it’s essential that you stay in one of the lakeside hotels or B&Bs. Traverse your way to the north of the lake and you’ll find the Riva Del Garda. This is one of the best resorts here, with loads of cool things to do.

The weather makes it perfect for windsurfing and other watersports, or you could book yourself onto some cycling holidays through the Dolomites slightly further north. There are endless possibilities, which is why Lake Garda needs to be on your list.

Lake Como

Slightly further west, towards the Lombardy region of Italy, you’ll find Lake Como. It’s smaller than Lake Garda, which is actually one of its unique features. While still a popular tourist destination, you’re likely to see fewer people and fewer families here. It’s definitely the better option for a more relaxing lakeside holiday.

The lake is framed by ridiculously beautiful Renaissance architecture and stunning little mountain towns. It’s a picturesque setting that also offers access to the Dolomites mountain range for a bit of hiking. If you have to only pick one of the towns to visit around this lake, opt for Tremezzo. It’s packed full of vibrant gardens and awesome villas.

Isn’t it fun when you try something a little bit different? Milan and Venice are still great holiday destinations in Northern Italy, but there are better places out there. Try any of these three little gems to get a proper experience of what this area of the country is like. It’s a stark contrast to the south, and many people actually prefer holidays in Northern Italy after they’ve tried them!
