Affordable Home Updates

As someone who has recently bought a house, I'm constantly surprised by how much things seem to cost. Broken boiler? £200. Dishwasher repair? That'll set you back £100 just for someone to tell you what's wrong - but forget fixing it... Houses are expensive and it's so easy to just watch money disappear on little things. I don't know about you, but before I moved in, I had absolutely no idea how expensive it would be and had big plans which I now realise were probably slightly overambitious... So I thought why not share the things I had big plans on changing...

  1. Change my windows from standard white to charcoal frames Now this just seems ridiculous because it would add zero value to the house as the house already has standard uPVC windows in place. But if you did buy somewhere with only double glazed windows, you would want to update these. Why not try looking at someone like Three Counties Windows for a very necessary fix. Windows can honestly affect the heat and warmth of a house so it's worth doing.

  2. New kitchen If you've seen my Pinterest you'll know that I had very big plans but my kitchen doesn't need anything doing to it. I'm in a mid-terrace house and have a good-sized white kitchen so why would I change it? Obviously, I know this isn't my "forever" home, but that means I am constantly debating if something will add value to the house or not.

  3. Updated bathroom This is the one room of the house I knew would add value to the property if I updated it. I am quite lucky in that it's a standard white bathroom suite, it's just a bit dated. There's nothing wrong with it and if I was in a rental, there'd be no issue, but as a Beauty and skincare geek, a bathroom is important to me so that is something I'll be looking at updating. Again, I had big plans with a Pinterest worthy bathroom but living in a mid-terrace, unfortunately, I don't have the space for that dreamy freestanding bath and a shower room could mean it'd be difficult to sell in the future. But bathrooms are expensive so that'll be a saving goal for the future. We're thinking long term here.

  4. New flooring Again, this is one of those things that absolutely doesn't need to be done, but I want it as my downstairs has laminate flooring that is fine... It just looks permanently dirty and is something I'll be wanting to change eventually. But again, it's not a necessity and will be something I consider in the future... But I'm also trying to figure out if it's something I could do myself as it sounds quite fun honestly...

Do you own a house and have things you'd like doing to it? Have you had to do any big changes or has it all been fairly reasonable? I'm so pleased that I've not had any huge tasks that I've needed to do in the house!
