The Best Places to Have Brunch in Brunei (2018)
Hello, it's Ellie again, with yet another food orientated Brunei post - because all I tend to do when I come back to Brunei is eat. But there are worse things you could do? It seems that just as Brunei had a coffee shop revival in 2017, the thing in 2018 seems to be a Brunch revolution. And if you're a reader of this blog, you should know that brunch is one of my favourite things to schedule into my weekends. So it was an obviously arduous task to try all these cafes for brunch, but hopefully, they'll help you plan your weekend a little bit better!
Sidenote: most of the brunch places I've been to, are quite westernised but I have included a couple of local favourites! Please let me know if I've missed anywhere important!
Rack and Brew.
I swear Rack&Brew has the best Instagram marketing because their food porn pictures completely sucked me in! Rack&Brew has changed so much since I did my Brunei Coffee Shop Guide back in 2017, but they've come leaps and bounds! They also do a rather wonderful brunch! We stopped in for breakfast and enjoyed both the French Toast and the Fishcakes Eggs Benedict. Both were presented beautifully and tasted incredible! Rack&Brew also does really good coffee and I tried their Chocolate Ice Cube drink which is a chocolate ice cube drink that you pour milk over. It's great fun! The cafe is also really quite large (which is rare in Brunei) so there are plenty of comfy chairs to lounge around in! (If you fancy something sweet after your brunch, they do great cake, too.)
Rack&Brew is located at Unit 9, Block H, 1st & 2nd floor, Abdul Raak Complex, Gadong (opposite The Mall and next to McDonald's)
Danes.
Danes is one of the few non-halal western cafes in Brunei and it is definitely an expatriate favourite - the type of place where you'll almost certainly run into other people you know! As Danes is a western cafe, it caters for mainly European meals and has quite an extensive all-day breakfast menu! As it is non-halal, they do serve pork-based products - so if you're after bacon, this is where to go! Personal favourites include the Pulled Pork Eggs Benedict and the French toast. Danes is also meant to be famous for their Kolomee, but I haven't tried it yet! There's nothing much to be said about their decor (some of the tables have superhero logos on them?), but the food definitely makes up for this!
Danes is located at Jalan Batu Bersurat | Unit 102, Gadong BE3519, Brunei Darussalam .
Roti Culture.
Roti Culture is fairly new in Brunei and is an attempt to really promote a local dish - Roti! Roti is such a childhood favourite and something that my brother and I used to look forward to! Roti is typically served morning and evening but the cafe serves it all day. If you're new to Brunei and looking to try roti, this is a good place to start! The cafe is decorated with images from Brunei so it's really lovely to see. I must admit, it's not the best roti I've tried, but it is still pretty good!
Roti Culture is located at: Block H, Units 8 & 9, Ground Floor, Bangunan Pengkalan, Gadong, Jalan Tungku Link/Batu Bersurat, BE3719 .
Caffe Verve.
I swear Caffe Verve must be one of the most beautifully decorated cafes in Brunei. From the interior wall mural to the stunning blue Moroccan tiles, it really is very instagrammable! And they've just started doing Brunei! Unlike many brunch places in Brunei, Verve has really kept things simple and offers firm favourites like omelettes, scrambled eggs and of course, pancakes. We went for a mushroom omelette, salmon & scrambled eggs and eggs benedict. They were all served with a salad which is a nice change in Brunei where things often come sans vegetation! Verve really focuses on good coffee so of course, a cappuccino with breakfast is always necessary! I actually have a dedicated post for Verve, so read about that here.
Caffe Verve is tucked away at No 6A Spg 68 Jln Batu Bersurat (at the end of the block, beyond Sopan furniture).
Ximply Chriz.
Ximply Chriz is another favourite of mine, and is such a cosy little cafe that I love telling people about it! Ximply Chriz has been around for quite a while and serves wonderful brunch items as well as coffee and cake! I love their eggs benedict but they have a large variety of other options available! There isn't much to say about their decor, but it is really sweet and gives the cafe a wonderful cosy vibe which is a nice change from the overly modern! They're also really well priced and an easy location to get to and park at! I've written about them before as part of my Brunei Cafe Series, so make sure to check that out here.
Ximply Chriz is located in Regent Square, Bandar Seri Begawan (in the same block as Excapade Sushi).
Raja's Catering.
One of our family's favourite places for South Indian food is at Raja's Catering in BSB. Not only do they do the best tandoori and naan, but they also offer a host of breakfast dishes that are perfect for brunch! My mum is a fan of their dosai, whilst my brother and I love their roti. It's a firm favourite and definitely worth the visit! It's also very reasonably priced so definitely won't break the bank. Raja's is definitely no frills but the food is really good and the staff are lovely!
Rajas can be found at Pap Umi Kalthum Shophouses (Jalan Tutong), Jalan Laksmana Abdul Razak, Bandar Seri Begawan BA1712.
So there we go, my current favourite places to grab brunch or breakfast in Brunei! Have I missed anywhere incredible? I'm always looking for new places to try!
